The Signal app require a user to associate Signal with a mobile phone number. Some of us choose to not have a mobile phone (see issue #1), which make this property of Signal very problematic. A promising alternative to Signal is Jami, https://jami.net/ . Perhaps it should be recommended instead of Signal. It is using peer to peer protocols similar to Bittorrent instead of centrally located infrastructure and provide end to end encrypted messaging as well sa encrypted audio and video calls. Jami unfortunately depend on UDP instead of TCP, making it impossible to use via Tor, but it isn't easy to use Signal via Tor either, so I am not sure that is a big disadvantage.
