QGIS (formerly Quantum GIS) is a user friendly Open Source Geographic Information System (GIS) licensed under the GNU General Public License.
ArcGIS is the most widely used commercial GIS. The University of Edinburgh has a site licence and copies can be purchased from IS Software Services. As well as ArcGIS Desktop, ArcGIS Online is available and includes free access to Esri Premium online training courses.
