Problem with using Excel file

I uploaded a set of records from a .xlsx file, and got some unhelpful results on the validation page:

I save the file as csv, and in that format it was successfully validated:

Those sorts of error messages come from the input validation library and are a bit out of my hand.
What they are saying is that a date string was expected and something else was received.
I daresay that will be have something to do with Excel storing dates as floating point numbers internally.
That theory would explain why the CSV file worked perfectly okay.
We should look at improving this experience.
