Esqueleto - a fork from _s (Underscores)

Esqueleto is a fork from _s (Underscores) that I've made for my personal use.

There is a movement from the WordPress team towards a new way of using themes called Full Site Editing (FSE). To be able to use full site editing a block theme needs to be used and neither Underscores nor Esqueleto are developed to be block themes. The next WordPress version (5.9) scheduled to be released at the beginning of 2022 will have FSE as its basis. Therefore block themes are probably the way to go now for the ordinary WordPress user.

FSE is a good thing and I see it with good eyes but I think that it doesn't fulfill all the possible use cases. That's why I intend to maintain Esqueleto as a starter theme for power users and developers who really want to deal directly with code using html, sass, css, javascript, php, node and other advanced tools to build their themes.

That is a call for every one who sees themselves among these power users and developers and feel as orphans of _s (Underscores) to come, download and use Esqueleto. And if you find some issue, please let us know. And if you think there is something you can contribute feel free to open a PR that I will be happy to analise and discuss and review in order to improve the project and maintain it alive.

Actual status

The project is basically the same with the updated dependencies but I've made some other improvements:

  • Added a script to help one starting up with the starter theme usage
  • I've also made some improvements on the readme to provide better instructions about starting to use the starter theme.
  • There were made some changes to the sass files to update it to the new dart sass way of doing things and to improve organization.

Why I have forked _s (Underscores)

There is an issue in this repository called Is this project dead? with some discussion about this project been not maintained anymore. Some people of the community prompted to maintain this project back there on 2020 but it is obvious now that, despite of the fact that it seems to be some interest from the community about this project (people still open issues and PR here and there), no one is maintaining it anymore.

My initial intention was to contribute to _s project and not to maintain a fork but I have no answers from no one from the Autommattic members or from regular contributors of this repository on the issues I've tried to interact to (#1384, #1509, #1511, #1506, #1499).
