You can help us with your translation efforts!

It is quite easy and can be done right in your browser.
And it doesn't matter if you

  • just want to review your preferred language's translations by other contributors or
  • want to add some phrases
  • or want to improve existing translations
  • or want to request your own language if it isn't available yet.

Any help will be appreciated. No matter how much you are willing to contribute.

Our community of translators is active on the transifex.com website! It is crowd-sourcing at its best.

Here is a list of already requested translations that still need some help:

  • Nepali (ne)
  • Burmese (my)
  • Uzbek (uz)
  • Sinhala (sl)
  • Esperanto (eo)
  • Panjabi (Punjabi) (pa)
  • Icelandic (is)
  • Urdu (is)
  • tagalog (tl)
  • Malayalam (ml)
  • Hindi (hi)
  • Tamil (ta)
  • Kurdish (ku)
  • Norwegian (non-Bokmål, that's already quite active) (nl)
  • Bengali (bn)
  • Filipino (fil)
  • Khmer (km)
  • Belarusian (be)
  • Azerbaijani (az)
  • Estonian (et)
  • ...

Or just request your own language!

Here are some steps about how to get started:

  1. Please go to https://www.transifex.com/free-software-for-android/adaway/
  2. Login or create a new account (you can conveniently login via Github as well)
  3. Enroll into the language you want to contribute to or even submit a request for a new language.
    • Please keep in mind that we want to stick to the basic languages where possible (e.g. sr for Serbian).
Please refrain to request regional localizations (like sr_RS).
  4. In your language section, you can browse all available resources and start translating strings right in your browser.
    • You don't have to download anything. Just click "Translate". The downloads are meant for more advanced use cases.

Here are some tips for using Transifex:

  • Make sure to have an eye on the "Suggestions", "History", "Context" and "Glossary" tabs on every entry.
    • Mind translation efforts that were already done or suggested.
Basically, »stand on the shoulders of giants« where possible.
    • Sometimes source strings change only marginally, but their translations get cleared anyway.
You can easily recover their previous translations by looking at the "Suggestions" tab. Just make sure they really fit the new source text and edit the translation if needed.
  • Help us validate translations by reviewing others'.
  • Some strings contain placeholders - like for HTML tags or numbers.
You can click on them to add them or use keyboard shortcuts (see the page settings for an overview).
  • You can point out issues to the Translation Organizers via the "Comments" tab or just add a comment.
    • Be aware that you can mention other users by "@" followed by the user name. This ensures they get notified.
  • There is a quite hidden discussion forum on Transifex:
  • Don't forget to save your work!
  • Please don't create any Translation Pull Request here on Github.
    • We will integrate your contributions from time to time into the code by exporting from Transifex directly. No need to provide any files from your side. ;-)
  • For more information about how to use Transifex, see https://docs.transifex.com/

We will add all Transifex translations from time to time to the app.

(Unfortunately, we cannot merge your particular translations via Github directly. Please follow the steps above instead.
Sorry, but it causes some major synchronization issues if not followed. We have to consolidate many contributions by translators and sync them up to the latest state. That is just not possible via Github.)

Have fun!

If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask!

Best regards,
your AdAway team!

Will not sync HTML files for now. The source was changed only structurally. However, the tranlsations were reset nonetheless. So we had a huge amount of fallbacks to English.

Dutch is 100% translated. Please merge as soon as possible.

Right now there's a complete Spanish localization, and an incomplete Spanish Mexico localization. In Uruguay, it defaults to Mexico and causes issue #1220. It might make sense to remove the Spanish Mexico localization, or at least add Spanish LatAm which I volunteer to translate.

Is the translation unreviewed?Chinese translation, user: RainSlide, always use some informal language to translate.

I have modified it many times, but user: RainSlide has always changed back to his informal language translation.

Unfortunately yes, it is unreviewed. Translators have to self-organize themselves as we obviously cannot do this. Sorry about that. We have to trust in your experience.
There is technically a review process, but we don't enforce it, because we don't have enough engaged translators to make it work.
I'm not sure how I can help you with that right now. But thanks for bringing it to our attention. It seems we might have to review our Transifex settings and introduce some sort of communication channel for translators.

Why not use crowdin? It is more convenient to translate and experience better.

String-Arrays were updated on Transifex to include placeholders for all items.

About moving
Because there is quite some overhead to move our translation efforts to another platform we won't just move to crowdin or any other platform right now. There is already a big user base on Transifex, which we do not want to lose. And there is the effort to move the technical integrations as well.
Transifex has it's issues, we are very aware of these. But it gets the job done.

About non-regional languages (and string-array issue)
Our decision to keep the languages as basic as possible is a result of a limited number of translators and technical limitations. Just adding more regions does not solve our current problem with string-arrays. It would just be a workaround for a particular language setup.

To provide a workaround, I added all the missing entries to all languages in Transifex. I hope the translators can keep this up-to-date.

About translation discussions and coordination
Besides the comments on each translation, Transifex provides a project-wide and language-wide discussion section:
https://www.transifex.com/free-software-for-android/teams/84848/discussions/
Feel free to start topics.
Be aware, that you can mention particular users in Transifex comments and issues by using "@" followed by the user name.

Some translators are unintentionally introducing wrongly encoded elements.

Hello @Vankog,

I make many translations of many apps. I want to correct some translation mistakes in AdAway.
Could you give me permission as a Reviewer to correct approved strings?

Regards,
Burak
