after upgrading my device to 5.1 the notifications started to appear duplicated sometimes and sometimes it worked just fine. Also when ever I click on a notification (to mark it as read) after a while it appears like its unread.

I see similar issues with duplicated notifications. In particular, I had to turn off notifications for Gmail because I'd get a new one on AcDisplay's lockscreen every time new mail arrived, and I get lots of mail. This is not Android version specific - I see the behavior on a device running 4.2 Jellybean.
What I'd like to see is one notification for Gmail with the current number of messages in the icon updated. Similar comments apply to any app that generates a lot of notifications. If an icon already exists on the lockscreen, there shouldn't be an additional one. A new one should only appear if the old one was cleared.
